William T Turman

William T. Turman (1867 - 1960) was active/lived in Indiana, California.  William Turman is known for Landscape, portrait and still life painting, teaching.

A noted landscape, portrait and still-life painter, William T. Turman was also recognized for his role as an educator. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Union Christian College in Merom, Indiana before pursuing his artistic career.

Turman began his formal training in art at the Chicago Academy of the Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago under Alden Finney Brooks and Antonin Sterba. He was also a student of Daniel Garber at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and studied with Francis Smith and Alexander Theobald Van Laer in New York City.

In 1894, Turman settled in Terre Haute and began teaching at Indiana State Normal School, also known as Teachers' State College (now Indiana State University). He continued his educational role at the school, and was the director of the art department, until 1934.
